Tonnellerie Meyrieux

Nestled in the famous wine town of Nuits-Saint-Georges in the heart of Burgundy, Tonnellerie Meyrieux was established in 1991 by Daniel Meyrieux. A dynamic family business focused on preserving the craftsmanship and unique expertise in making premium barrels. In 2010, Jean-Luc Sylvain purchased Tonnellerie Meyrieux and the cooperage has gone from strength to strength.

With new ownership Meyrieux has gained prestige, while remaining artisanal, with a strong respect for its origins. Meyrieux and Sylvain share the same values of trust, authenticity, and generosity and are motivated by the desire to improve quality by combining traditional and modern techniques. Tonnellerie Meyrieux currently produces 6,000 barrels a year and is one of the leading coopers in Burgundy.

Seasoning and Toasting

Tonnellerie Meyrieux believes the two most important aspects of premium barrel production are their outdoor seasoning and toasting.

Outdoor seasoning is achieved by stacking the staves by hand in a chimney effect outside in the open air, allowing the staves to dry thoroughly or up to 2 to 3 years. This traditional form of seasoning is now rare, and it remains one of the key differentiators for Meyrieux.

Toasting the barrels over a bed of coals with an open flame, Cooperage Meyrieux has developed unique toasts  - Blonde, Medium, A Coeur and Max -  that impart different aromatics in the winemaking process.

Raw materials

The cooper's raw materials are noble and prestigious. The majority of our oak wood comes from world-renowned state-owned forests in France, managed by the ONF using sustainable principles.

Meyrieux selects their oak according to very strict criteria.

Thanks to the Famille Sylvain stave mills, Tonnellerie Meyrieux has complete control over the oak supply chain, from forest to stave mill, to seasoning yard to barrel manufacture. This results in unparallelled consistency from barrel to barrel and year to year.

Traceability is paramount, with the origin of the oak known at every stage of barrel production.
